Since early 1950’s solar energy has been a power source, but due to technological issues which marked it as an ineffective and expensive energy source. This solar cell could produce enough electricity and was efficient enough to run small electrical divices. The New York Times called this discovery “the beginning of a new era, leading eventually to the realization of harnessing the almost limitless energy of the sun for the uses of civilization.”(Picture is not of the first silicon solar cell)

Solar Power History

William Grylls Adams along with a student of his, Richard Day, discovered that when selenium was exposed to light, it produced electricity. An electricity expert named Werner von Siemens, stated that the discovery was “scientifically of the most far-reaching importance.”  These selenium cells were not that efficient, but it did prove that light could be converted into electricity without heat or moving parts.
